Canberra - The East Timorese independence leader, Mr Xanana Gusmao, said yesterday he planned to return to his troubled homeland next week.

"I am planning to go next week," Mr Gusmao told reporters after meeting the Australian Prime Minister, Mr John Howard. Mr Gusmao said he would soon begin discussing plans for the UN administration of the territory with the head of the UN Mission in East Timor (UNAMET), Mr Ian Martin, in Darwin.
