Patna - At least 35 "upper class" sleeping villagers were shot dead, apparently by leftwing gunmen, in eastern India's violence-racked Bihar state late yesterday, police said.

Maoist guerrillas have been active in parts of India - especially the states of Andhra Pradesh and Bihar - for the past 30 years, fighting against the exploitation of poor farmers by feudal landlords.
