New York - An armed man surrendered early yesterday after storming past security at Kennedy International airport to board an aircraft where he took the pilot and co-pilot hostage while passengers frantically escaped.

The suspect, Mr Aaron Commey (22), was to be arraigned in Brooklyn federal court yesterday after taking control of the National Airlines chartered jet with 143 passengers and a crew of seven bound for Las Vegas late on Thursday.

The incident lasted more than five hours.
