A judge ordered the forfeiture of a shotgun from a man who tried to shoot a magpie at 3 a.m. on a December morning. Michael Loftus (38), from Lavallyroe, Cloonfad, Co Roscommon, missed the bird but shattered the window of a nearby dwelling house.

Loftus, who pleaded guilty to the "reckless discharge of a firearm", appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Ballyhaunis Court, Co. Mayo, yesterday.
