Bahrain - The six member-states of the Gulf Co-operation Council signed the region's first mutual defence pact at the close of its 21st summit meeting in Bahrain, Michael Jansen reports. The e of the meeting move on Sunday angered Iraq, which staged its largest military parade in a decade to coincide with the gathering.

The pact commits member-states - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia - to defend one another if threatened.
