Six men in black berets and gloves lined up silently as Jim Gallagher’s coffin was placed on a plinth and draped in the Tricolour in the city's Bogside area.

Mr Gallagher, who was interned by the North's security forces during the 1970s, was involved with splinter group the Republican Network for Unity. He died suddenly at the weekend.

His remains, with black gloves on top of the coffin, were carried from his Cable Street home through the streets of the Bogside.

He was taken for Requiem Mass at St Columba’s church in the city.

On Tuesday three masked gunmen fired shots over the coffin outside the house. A crowd of onlookers applauded when the shots were fired.
