A public meeting will be held tonight to discuss claims of cutbacks at the country's main hospital for children's care and cancer treatment.

The organisers say that patients needing essential chemotherapy are often turned away. However, the hospital has recently denied that this is the case.

Other issues raised by the organisers include the permanent closure of 25 beds at the hospital and the planned closure of the ultrasound unit for the month of August.

They also contend that temporary staff at the hospital are threatened with lay-offs and that cuts are pending in the day unit.

ireland.comhas this morning contacted the hospital seeking clarification of the issues raised.

In an initial response, a spokeswoman again denied that patients needing chemotherapy were being turned away from the hospital. She was not aware of the issues likely to be raised by a doctor from the hospital who is due to speak at the event, but said he was doing so in a personal capacity.

"The hospital has nothing to do with the meeting," she said.

Speakers will also include David Fitzgerald of the New Crumlin Hospital Group. The meeting will take place this evening at the secondary school hall, Rosemary College, Armagh Road in Crumlin at 8 p.m.
