Nearly 2,000 people will leave for an annual pilgrimage to Lourdes today.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will lead the group, which includes over 170 sick and infirm pilgrims from Dublin Archdiocese.

More than 700 volunteers - including doctors, nurses and young students - will support them during their five-day trip.

"It is inspirational to see the efforts of all involved, they freely give so much of their time and talents," said Martina Mullane, head of the helpers. "It can be both a humbling and rewarding experience."

Thousands travel to the small village of Lourdes in the South of France each year.
