The 32-County Sovereignty Committee said in a statement last night that IRA abductions and intimidation were "simply an effort to silence republican criticism and deny the right to public debate".

The alleged political wing of the Real IRA - the group said to have been behind the Omagh bombing - claimed that victims of alleged abductions had been questioned only about their political beliefs and about other people who have voiced criticism of the Good Friday Agreement.

Their statement came in response to claims in An Phoblacht that republican dissidents had stolen some IRA weapons.

Last night's statement added: "We urge members of the wider republican family and the republican grassroots to join in halting this campaign before a greater tragedy develops.
