The Greek press was divided on the on the introduction of the euro, with some leading papers hailing the opportunities afforded by the new currency and others denouncing what they saw as a setback for workers.
"Welcome Euro" headlined the liberal Kathimerini daily, which said the euro was the "greatest challenge" to Greek prosperity being put forward by its European partners. Rizopastis, the paper of the ultra-conservative and anti-European Greek communist party, called the money "a new weapon of big capital against the workers."
