Washington - A White House steward is reported to have told a grand jury that he picked up tissues with lipstick and other stains after Ms Monica Lewinsky met President Clinton alone, the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday.
The steward, Mr Bayani Nelvis, told the federal grand jury he saw Mr Clinton and Ms Lewinsky together in a study off the Oval Office, said the newspaper.
The Wall Street Journal put two versions of the report on its Internet site. The original suggested Mr Nelvis told the grand jury about finding and discarding the tissues, but a later version said only that he told the Secret Service about the stained tissues and omitted any reference to the grand jury.
Meanwhile, the independent counsel who is inquiring into Mr Clinton, Mr Kenneth Starr, said he was moving swiftly and warned he could press "extraordinary" charges soon. He said his investigation was "moving very quickly, and we have made very significant progress".
He cited the court's gag order and refused to comment on a possible immunity deal with Ms Lewinsky (24), the former White House intern alleged to have had an 18-month affair with Mr Clinton.
