Latvia's embattled prime minister said for the first time on today that a new government was likely to be formed in the Baltic state.

Aigars Kalvitis has faced two large demonstrations and wide criticism for his attempt to sack the country's anti-corruption boss. Four ministers have quit or been dismissed.

Kalvitis told LNT television a government could not work in the long term without four ministers, but that it had to pass the 2008 budget, make sure a border treaty with Russia was approved and carry out an administrative reform.

"I have expressed myself very clearly on this question of the need for a new government. It is just a question of time," Mr Kalvitas said.
