It was unclear last night how the State will be represented at the funeral of Princess Diana. The funeral is being considered "a unique funeral for a unique person", and the Government is waiting to hear from the British embassy what level and extent of representation is considered appropriate before making arrangements, according to a spokesman.

Yesterday, the President, Mrs Robinson, sent a representative to the British embassy in Dublin to sign the book of condolences there.
