The Government this morning began a renewed legal attempt aimed at blocking the commissioning of the MOX nuclear recycling plant at Sellafield.

Attorney General Mr Michael McDowell is to ask the UN Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, which is based in Hamburg, Germany, to order an immediate suspension of work at the plant.

The Government is also due to seek a guarantee from the British government that there will be no movement of radioactive material through Irish waters.

At the High Court in London last week, Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth failed to stop the plant from being commissioned.
