Washington - The official approval of an abortion pill has drawn differing reactions from the two main presidential candidates, writes Joe Carroll. The RU-486 pill already in use in Europe has been authorised by the Food and Drug Administration this week after years of tests.
The Vice-President, Mr Al Gore, said that the pill "ought not to be kept away from women for some political reason." Mr George W. Bush, who opposes abortion, said he feared that making the pill available "will make abortions more and more common, rather than more and more rare."
