Google showcases 'Glass' in demo

Google has posted a video featuring fresh details about 'Glass,' the company's revolutionary Internet-connected glasses it plans to introduce next year.

The eagerly-awaited device will allow wearers to record video, capture images, make phone calls and access the Internet while on the move. It is anticipated that the ability to wear a mobile computer offering such easy access to the virtual world could well mark the next step in mobile computing.

The video footage, all captured by the computerised glasses and posted on YouTube today, shows how Glass could be used in different settings.

The device looks like a futuristic pair of wraparound glasses and features a camera, microphone and speaker to allow communication. It also features a virtual display positioned on the top right corner of the wearer's field of vision.

According to the video, users will be able to take photographs simply by issuing a voice command to the device to "take a picture". It will also record what the wearer sees, hands free, and will also be able to share footage, photographs and other information, live.

The glasses will also give users access to apps enabling them to follow virtual directions or translate into other languages.

The company is hosting a competition for those who wish to get their hands on Glass ahead of the rest of the public. "Bold, creative individuals" are asked to come up with creative ideas about how they would use Glass and can submit their ideas via Twitter or Google+.

Applications must be 50 words or less. Applicants must include the hashtag #ifihadglass and can attach up to 5 photos and a short video (15 secs max). Unfortunately for interest Irish parties, applicants must live in the US to apply.

Those who are lucky enough to be selected will have to part with $1,500 (and travel costs) to attend a "special pick-up experience" in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles.

The deadline for applications is February 27th.
