Burren Tolkien Festival, all weekend:

Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien was no stranger to the Burren region and many believe the karst landscapes may have inspired some of his work. Now, the region is paying homage the the famous writer with its first JRR Tolkien festival, which began yesterday and will run until next Thursday.

During the weekend, the festival will include a talk by model maker Mark Maher, who worked on last year’s film adaptation of The Hobbit. There will also be a creative writing workshop, afternoon tea and the launch of a specially-commissioned hobbit ale.

Tickets for the festival can be purchased online and cost €50.

Taste of Carlingford festival, Saturday and Sunday:

This two-day festival will celebrate fine food and drink in the medieval village of Carlingford. Local restaurants, bars and cafés will provide visitors with a taste of Carlingford in a marketplace full of stalls and tents while artisan food producers will offer fresh produce and local oysters.

The festival will also include street entertainment, music, heritage walks and cookery demonstrations for children. There will be crab fishing and kayaking at King John’s Pier, if the weather and tide allows.

Limerick Regatta, Saturday:

A tradition since 1870, the regatta returned from Kilaloe to co Limerick in 1984 organisers are hoping to outdo previous years with this weekend’s event. More than 30 clubs will be represented by hundreds of crew members, making it a record breaking year for the regatta.

The regatta itself is held in O’Brien’s Bridge rather than Limerick city, as tidal conditions do not allow enough time to organise an event of this size. The event will take place from 9am to 7pm and is free.

Cork Motorfest, Saturday and Sunday:

There is much more than cars on view at this year’s Cork Motorfest. The event will kick off on Saturday with a strongman truck pulling competition. There will also be live action drifting, go-karting and even a dog show, with a variety of different categories.

Naturally there will be a variety of different motors on display, from vintage cars to modified racers to suit all tastes. There will also be bikes and trucks or all shapes and sizes. Entry costs €10 and will take place at the Corrin event centre in Fermoy.
