A man who called a black Irishwoman "nigger" and threw a glass in her face had been given the chance to avoid a jail sentence by paying compensation.
Mr Jason Walsh (26), of Sutton Downs, Bayside, Dublin, had a pint thrown over him by Ms Helena Kenna after he called her a "nigger" as she brushed past him in a pub. Walsh then threw a glass in her face causing bruising under her eye. He pleaded guilty at Dublin District Court to common assault and breach the peace at Dollymount House on Hallowe'en night last.
Judge Gerard Haughton said Walsh would have gone to prison if he had previous convictions. But because he had also pleaded guilty and apologised, a jail sentence would not be imposed if £500 compensation was paid by this afternoon.
