A High Court judge yesterday approved a settlement of £1,450,000 for a schoolgirl who uses a wheelchair following a road accident at Castletownbere, Co Cork.

Kirby Rubens (17) of Paradise Gardens, Geraldville, Mallow, Co Cork, through her father Fionbar, had sued Mr Gerard Sheehan, of Connolly Avenue, Mallow, who was alleged to be the driver of the car involved in the accident on August 9th, 1999.

She suffered complete paraplegia of her lower limbs. She claimed she was a passenger in the car and was asleep when it overturned.

Mr Justice O'Neill directed the money, with preliminary deductions, be held in trust until she turns 18.
