Gardaí are today questioning a girl who was arrested carrying a viable pipe bomb through a Limerick housing estate.

Gardaí are today questioning a girl who was arrested carrying a viable pipe bomb through a Limerick housing estate.

The girl, who is understood to be aged 18, was stopped by gardaí  in St Mary’s Park at about 8.20pm yesterday.

Army bomb disposal experts were called in and carried out a controlled explosion on the crude home-made device.

“These things are all unstable, they’re all dangerous," a Defence Forces spokesman said. "They all have the potential to kill or maim.”

It is not known where the girl was bringing the bomb.

She was arrested and is being held at Henry Street Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
