Aoife Franklyn, a pupil at St Andrew's College, Booterstown, Co Dublin, has scooped the overall prize in the fifth annual Poetry Aloud competition.

More than 1,200 post-primary students entered the spoken poetery contest, an increase of 300 from last year.

Aoife was presented with a cash prize of €500 and a shelf of poetry books for her school library. The intermediate winner was Kiah Townsend, Presentation Secondary School, Tralee, Co Kerry, and the junior winner was Shane McMahon, St Macartan's College, Monaghan.
