LABOUR LEADER:LABOUR LEADER Eamon Gilmore has been given a free hand by his party's TDs and Senators to take whatever action he sees fit this week in response to the political crisis, including Sinn Féin's no confidence motion in the Taoiseach.
The parliamentary Labour Party met for an hour at lunchtime yesterday.
A spokesman said afterwards there was “a sober discussion of the political situation and the events that occurred since the Dáil adjourned last Thursday”.
The spokesman added: “It was agreed that the party leader would have the flexibility to take whatever measures he deemed appropriate over the next few days.”
Although Labour would not be supporting the Sinn Féin motion of no confidence, the spokesman said that “if the party leader felt that tabling a motion of no confidence was appropriate he has the mandate to do so without going back to the parliamentary party”.
