Gilmore close to finding gem of a way to aid economy

No. That was not the Tánaiste on his hands and knees crawling around the tarmac at Zaventem international airport on Monday evening. But perhaps it should have been him.

Robbers can drop some of the loot when they’re in a hurry. The criminals who made off with a gigantic haul of uncut diamonds from the cargo hold of an aircraft in Brussels airport were done and dusted in a manner of minutes. They could easily have left a few gems behind.

Eamon Gilmore was in the thick of things when the crime was discovered. He was on his way to catch a flight to Dublin when police stopped him and his party and brought them to a waiting area. The entire area appeared to be in lockdown.

Finally, the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs was allowed to board. He didn’t find out what had happened at the airport until he was on the flight.

Just as well. Given the state of Ireland’s economy Eamon would probably still be on the tarmac with his Henry Hoover and magnifying glass.
