Berlin - Germany's upper house of parliament yesterday approved a limited form of gay marriage but watered down earlier proposals that would have given homosexual couples nearly equal status to their heterosexual counterparts.

With the new law approved by the Bundesrat, gay and lesbian couples gain a legitimacy that civil rights advocates say is an important step toward fighting discrimination, as well as a handful of new rights and privileges.
