Two German teenagers have been rescued from the Wicklow mountains following a search last night.

The pair, aged 16 and 17, were camping in the Wicklow Mountains National Park near Lugnaquillia.

They climbed the mountain, which is Leinster's highest, yesterday afternoon but became disorientated during the descent,

They called for help using a mobile phone after becoming trapped on steep ground.

A joint search operation was launched by the Glen of Imaal and Dublin/Wicklow mountain rescue teams.

The Coastguard helicopter helped locate the pair before returning to base after running low on fuel.

They were eventually found at 1.00am after a four-hour search and taken to the Glenmalure Lodge. They were said to be cold but uninjured.
