George Best has been freed following 10 hours under arrest in England in connection with an alleged assault.

Best, 57, was arrested at 2am yesterday in Reigate, Surrey where he used to share a house with his estranged wife Alex.

Police refused to confirm his identity, or the victim of the alleged assault, but said he was released without charge and that no accusations were being pursued "by any party".

The arrest is the latest drama in the life of the former Manchester United star.

Mrs Best announced her separation from her husband in September this year after he failed to curb his drinking following a liver transplant.

Best underwent the lifesaving operation more than a year ago and was told by doctors at the time that further alcohol abuse could kill him.

But he went on a very public drinking binge at a Surrey hotel in July, which culminated in his arrest. He was later released without charge.

He has since been photographed with other women, and been the subject of a number of kiss-and-tell revelations.
