Some 40 householders in north Mayo with evacuation warnings on their homes since landslides occurred on Dooncartin mountain on September 19th, hope to receive the latest scientific information on any further risks to their dwellings by Friday.

A significant stage assessment report on the area is due by the end of this week.

Two teams of geologists have been monitoring ground conditions on the mountain since the landslides caused severe structural damage to roads, houses, cemeteries and local amenities in the villages of Pollathomas, Glengad, Barr na Cuille and Cornhill.

The director of services for Mayo County Council in the region, Mr Peter Hynes, said yesterday that by Friday the local authority would be in a better position to update the families directly affected.
