An Irish academic has been elected as the first woman president of the 130-year-old International Geographical Union

An Irish academic has been elected as the first woman president of the 130-year-old International Geographical Union. Prof Anne Buttimer, head of the department of geography at UCD, was elected last week during the 29th International Geographical Congress in Seoul, Korea.

She has been one of the vice-presidents of the IGU for the past four years.
