The Assistant Garda Commissioner, Mr Jim McHugh, said "more vigorous" action would be taken against taxi-drivers if they attempted to repeat their blockade of Dublin roads.

He said gardai had adopted an "appropriate response to date" in their handling of last week's blockades at Dublin Airport, Christ Church and Kildare Street.

However, he warned that "more vigorous enforcement than there was at the outset" would be applied if the protests recurred.

The Minister for the Environment, Mr Dempsey, said efforts were being made to resolve the dispute.
