WITNESSES to the six vehicle crash near Croagh, on the Limerick Tralee road, were still being sought yesterday. Gardai wanted any further information available on the crash in which four people died. They want to find out if the truck involved jackknifed before the collision with five cars coming from the opposite direction. This would indicate that the driver was trying to take evasive action.
The driver of the truck was identified as Mr Paul Clancy (63), of Moy, Co Tyrone who was married with six children. His passenger, Mr Gerard O'Connor (38), of Moanlena, Newcastle West, was going to the Regional Hospital, Limerick, to visit his mother.
Mrs Mary Doherty (32), Dually, Newcastle West, who was driving the first of the oncoming cars, and her daughter Emma (4) were the other two victims. Mrs Doherty's two year old daughter, Sarah, was transferred from the intensive care unit at the Regional Hospital yesterday.
The remains of Mrs Doherty and her daughter are being taken to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Newcastle West, at 8 p.m. today, with the funeral Mass at 12 noon tomorrow, The remains of Mr O'Connor are being taken to Castlemahon Church at 6 p.m. today and the funeral Mass is at 12.30 tomorrow. Yesterday, the remains of Mr Clancy were taken from the Regional Hospital to the North.
