Gardaí in Limerick are investigating a gun attack in which a man in his late 20s was shot through the front window of a house.

The incident happened early yesterday morning at Clarina Avenue in Ballinacurra Weston in the city.

Gardaí say the incident was not linked to the ongoing feud on the north side of the city, but was more than likely connected to a local dispute in the Prospect area.

Two men wearing balaclavas approached a house at around 1am and knocked on the front door but there was no reply.

Moments later a man appeared at a window at the front of the house and at least one shot was fired through the window hitting him in the shoulder.

Gardaí believe a handgun may have been used in the attack and the scene was sealed off for forensic examination.

The injured man was removed to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick where his condition was described as stable.

Detectives from Roxboro Road, who are trying to establish a motive, interviewed him in hospital. Gardaí said it was too early to say whether there was any link between yesterday's gun attack and another shooting in nearby Prospect last Monday, when a 34- year-old man was shot in the lower back by two men outside a house at Lenihan Avenue.

It is believed he had been targeted by a local gang.
