Gardaí refused to comment on reports today that they are close to a breakthrough in the Raonaid Murray murder case.
Raonaid (17) was stabbed to death in the early hours of September 4th, 1999, only yards from her home in Silchester Park, Glenageary, Co Dublin.
Reports yesterday and this afternoon suggest that officers investigating the case were set to make an arrest and wanted to question a suspect they believe wrote a letter to the teenager's parents identifying another man as the killer.
A Garda spokesman refused to comment on the reports, saying the case was still under investigation.
Raonaid was repeatedly stabbed with a broad-bladed knife as she made her way home from Scott's pub in Dún Laoghaire.
Her body was discovered on Silchester Crescent, 200 yards from her home. She had dragged herself a distance from the scene of the attack before dying.
