Gardaí in Killarney, Co Kerry, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a teenage girl who collapsed in a community playground in Killarney on Wednesday night.
Ruth Harris (14) was with a small group of friends at around 8.30 p.m. at the Deerpark playground a short distance from her home.
The playground, which was established about two years ago, is near the primary all-Irish school Gaelscoil Faithleann, a number of holiday homes and a wooded area.
A Junior Cert student at St Brigid's Presentation Secondary School, Ruth became unwell and collapsed in the playground.
Her friends sought help immediately.
Gardaí were alerted, resuscitation was attempted by gardaí and an ambulance was called.
However, they failed to revive her and she was pronounced dead on arrival at Killarney District Hospital.
Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster carried out a post mortem examination at Tralee General Hospital yesterday. Gardaí are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.
Groups of Ruth's teenage friends, boys and girls, gathered yesterday afternoon at the playground after school.
Four bouquets of flowers stood in a corner, placed by her shocked and clearly upset colleagues.
A local town councillor, Ms Síle Dickson (FF), who lives in the Deerpark area said: "It's an awful tragedy for the family. Everybody is shocked and stunned. She was a lovely young girl. She had her life in front of her."
Ms Dickson called for more supervision of the playground late at night and said the area should be fully lit.
