Gardaí in Mullingar have opened a murder investigation following the death of an 82-year-old man in the town.

Gardaí are treating as suspicious the death of a man (82) whose body was found at his flat at Belvedere Court, off Castle Street in Mullingar at around 4.30pm yesterday.

The man, named locally and in the media as Mick Creighton, was found dead in his flat yesterday.  Gardaí confirmed this evening that he had suffered extensive injuries.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy has carried out a postmortem, which revealed that he had died from multiple injuries to the chest. The Garda Technical Bureau is continuing its investigation at the scene.

It is understood neighbours alerted the gardaí when they noticed Mr Creighton had not been seen in a number of days.

Gardaí called to the scene spotted the body through a second-floor window.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. An incident room has been established at Mullingar Garda station.
