Dublin gardaí say they are "a long way off" from arresting anybody in connection with a late-night attack on a Dublin man last week, who later died from his injuries.

Mr James Kavanagh (36) from Malahide, sustained fatal head injuries after he was assaulted near a bus stop on Eden Quay in Dublin's north inner city last Tuesday.

He remained in a critical condition in the Mater Hospital until his death just after 5 p.m. last Friday.

It is understood Mr Kavanagh's death may have been linked to a row in an inner city pub just minutes before he died.

Gardaí are anxious to speak to three people whom they believe may have been involved in an altercation on the quay with Mr Kavanagh.

The three are believed to have boarded the 77A bus to Tallaght immediately after the attack, which left Mr Kavanagh unconscious on the pavement.

However despite having recovered CCTV footage from the city centre taken last Tuesday night and having appealed for witnesses to come forward, gardaí say they are not close to arresting anybody.

Gardaí from Store Street have renewed their appeal for anyone who was in the Eden Quay area at the time the attack happened to come forward.

They believe a number of potentially valuable witnesses may have been in the area when the attack took place just before 9 p.m. last Tuesday.

It is understood no funeral arrangements were in place last night for Mr Kavanagh, a married man with children.

His body had not been released yesterday from the City Morgue.
