Gardaí investigating the murder last October of Rachel O'Reilly yesterday released without charge a man they had questioned for 48 hours.

The man was released at 4.40pm after having been questioned at Balbriggan Garda station since 5pm on Wednesday afternoon following his arrest.

He was detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act on suspicion of withholding information.

The man arrested is not the chief suspect in the case.

However, he is closely associated with the chief suspect, and was well known to Ms O'Reilly. His arrest brings to five the number of people questioned in relation to the killing.

In March a 35-year-old man was arrested at a house in Crumlin, Dublin, and taken for questioning to Balbriggan Garda station. Last November three people, including the chief suspect, a male colleague and a female friend, were arrested and questioned, but were released without charge.

Gardaí believe the man arrested in November was providing a false alibi for the chief suspect. The woman arrested has been romantically linked to the chief suspect since before Ms O'Reilly's death.

Ms O'Reilly (30) was found dead at her home in Baldarragh, near Naul, Co Dublin, by her mother, Rose Callely, on October 4th last year. She died after receiving several blows to the head with a blunt instrument.

Gardaí are convinced they know who killed her, but have to date been unable to build a strong enough case for criminal charges to be pressed.

In March gardaí exhumed Ms O'Reilly's remains. They believed her coffin contained a number of notes which were placed there during her funeral.

Gardaí were hopeful that a note written by the chief suspect might contain something incriminating. However, it was illegible.
