Gardaí are today investigating a raid on a post office in Co Laois.  Three masked men armed with iron bars broke into a house attached to a post office in the village of Attanagh near Durrow between 4 and 5 a.m. this morning.

The intruders forced the owners, a couple in their early 60s, out of bed and locked them in a small room before taking a safe containing a small sum cash from the post office.

The couple remained locked up until they were rescued by a neighbour at shortly before 9 a.m., when the alarm was raised.  A garda forensic examination of the post office was carried out earlier today.
