Gardaí are investigating the fatal shooting of a man (27) who died in Co Donegal yesterday evening.
The man was identified as Andrew Burns from Strabane, Co Tyrone, by his parish priest Father Declan Boland who spoke to the press this afternoon on behalf of his family.
Fr Boland said Mr Burns was the youngest of four children and was a painter and decorator by trade.
He was shot and thrown from a car close to the local church in Donnaghloop, Castelfin, at about 7.30 pm last night.
Fr Boland refused to comment on reports that Mr Burns may have been shot by dissident republicans but did say he may have been "unfortunate in his choice of friends."
An event at the local youth club had been taking place at the time of the shooting and locals who heard two shots tried to help him but he died at the scene.
The car involved was seen going back over the Border towards Strabane, Co Tyrone.
The PSNI later found a burned out car in Derry and were investigating possible links with the shooting.
The scene has been preserved and officers from the Garda Technical Bureau have begun a forensic examination.
The State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy is at the scene and is due to remove the body to Letterkenny General Hospital later for postmortem examination.
Sinn Féin candidate for Donegal South West at the last general election Senator Pearse Doherty said the killing had sent "shockwaves through the community".
There has been concern in the area about a rise in crime, he said, and urged anyone with information to contact gardaí.
Dinny McGinley, a Fine Gael TD condemned the killing and urged co-operation with the Garda and the PSNI.
