Gardai in Drogheda, Co Louth, are investigating a double shooting which took place at a house in the town late last night. The bodies of a young man and woman were found with gunshot wounds in the bedroom of the house at Boyle O'Reilly Terrace shortly after 9 p.m.

Gardai were alerted to the scene by a neighbour who had contacted the ambulance services.

The woman was said to be in her late 20s and the man in his mid-40s. A double-barrelled shotgun was recovered at the scene.

The area around the terraced house, which is located near Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, was sealed off last night pending the arrival of Garda technical experts.

The bodies were to remain in the house overnight until the State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, arrived. He is expected to carry out a post mortems on the bodies today.

Gardai last night had not yet named the two, although it is believed the man was originally from Northern Ireland and had been living with the woman for some time at the house.

A Garda spokesman said that they were following a definite line of inquiry into the shootings.

Meanwhile, gardai in Tallaght are investigating a shooting incident last night at a house on Belgard Heights.

Two shots were fired shortly after midnight at the front door of the house which was unoccupied at the time.

No one was injured in the attack.
