Gardaí are still trying to positively identify a 51-year-old eastern European man who died in hospital after being found unconscious in a Garda cell with a head injury just hours after he was arrested in Cork city for criminal damage.

Initially when the man was arrested and taken to Togher Garda station, gardaí believed he was a Russian asylum seeker but they have since discovered the man had two passports and they believe he may be from Estonia. Gardaí have been in touch with the Estonian embassy.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster carried out a postmortem on the man at Cork University Hospital yesterday but gardaí have not released details for operational reasons.

Supt Pat McCarthy confirmed that gardaí are awaiting the result of toxicology tests carried out on the dead man, who had been living in Cork city though at no fixed abode.
