Gardaí and customs officers have impounded a ship in Drogheda harbour as part of an operation into the activities of dissident republicans.

Gardaí said the ship was carrying timber but was being searched under suspicion of smuggling contraband cigarettes.

The ship, the Dunkirk, is thought to have come from Eastern Europe. The search is expected to last most of the day.
