A search involving a Garda helicopter was under way in Co Waterford and south Kilkenny last night for four men who escaped with a substantial sum of money from the AIB bank at the Ardkeen shopping centre, in Dunmore Road, Waterford.

The masked raiders, who were armed with sawn-off shotguns, entered the bank and demanded cash. No shots were fired and nobody was injured, according to Garda reports. The men escaped in a red Pajero jeep bearing a false registration number. They headed towards Dunmore East but are thought to have doubled back towards Tramore.

Supt Michael McGarry, who is heading the investigation, has appealed for anyone with information to contact the gardai at 051-874888.
