Gardaí in Dublin are investigating what they have described as the suspicious death of a man in the Ballsbridge district of the city.

At around 4 p.m. yesterday the man's body was discovered by a relative in an upstairs apartment at Pembroke Road, and gardaí were alerted.

It is believed that the man, who was aged in his late 30s, is a non-national, possibly from Croatia.

The State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, was called to the scene along with a team from the Garda Technical Bureau.

The body was removed from the apartment shortly after 8 p.m. and taken to the City Morgue, where a post-mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death.

Last night detectives were conducting door-to-door inquiries in an effort to establish the circumstances of the man's death.

A Garda spokeswoman said the death was being treated as "suspicious", but she declined to comment further.
