THE Garda mounted mobile checkpoints in Waterford, Kilkenny, Wexford and Tipperary yesterday as part of a strategy to monitor the movements of criminals and curtail their activities in the south east area. The location of the checkpoints is regularly changed.

"It was not aimed at any criminals in particular," a Garda spokeswoman added.

The regional Garda commander, Assistant Commissioner Jim McHugh, is co, ordinating the operation from the Waterford/Kilkenny divisional headquarters in Kilkenny.
