An arms cache has been uncovered by gardai in Co Donegal during an ongoing investigation into the activities of dissident republicans.

A quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives was found buried in a drum in a wooden area in Porthall, about five miles from Lifford in Co Donegal, at 3.30 p.m.

The arms find included 100 pounds of home made explosives, one detonator, three timing power units, cortex, two hand-guns and 100 rounds of ammunition, a garda spokeswoman said.

The army has taken possession of the find and the search is ongoing, she said.
