Gardaí in Dublin are investigating a serious disturbance during last night's Hallowe'en celebrations.

Officers were called to a flat complex near Pearse Street after up to 100 youths were involved in stoning passing traffic and attempting to set parked cars on fire on the street.

One man was arrested.

A Garda spokesman said the fire brigade were extremely busy around the city extinguishing bonfires that had got out of control.

Gardaí in Cork reported a quiet night with no major disturbances, as did those in Limerick.

Galway gardaí said they had three or four controlled bonfire sites, with no reports of any trouble at the festivities.
