Detectives today arrested a convicted child sex offender who had been on the run for three weeks.

James Lombard, 37, with an address at Winters Hill, Cork, was convicted at Cork Circuit Court on February 7 of a number of sexual assaults.

Lombard failed to show up for the final day of the trial and was found guilty in his absence.

Gardai have been hunting him since then but an order restricting the release of information about the case was only lifted last week.

"Gardai have this afternoon arrested James Lombard in Carrigaline, Co Cork on foot of an arrest warrant issued at Cork Circuit Court on Monday," a spokeswoman for the force said.

"He is expected to appear before Cork District Court this evening.

"We wish to express our gratitude to the public for their assistance in this matter."
