Publicans, hoteliers and the Garda have joined forces to help collect money from the public for the Irish Red Cross humanitarian relief operations in South East Asia.
It is expected that every pub, club, restaurant and hotel in the country will have collection buckets in place this New Year's weekend for the appeal, the Garda said.
The joint appeal has been launched by the Garda, the Irish Hotels Federation, the Vintners' Federation of Ireland, the Licensed Vintners' Federation and the Irish Red Cross.
Publicans will deliver all monies collected to their local Garda stations and the Garda will arranged to lodge it directly to Irish Red Cross bank accounts.
Dublin City Council set up collection boxes for the Irish Red Cross in the Mansion House tomorrow and will extend the collection next week to 25 council offices and libraries across the city.
The Lord Mayor Cllr Michael Conaghan said he believed there would be a generous response.
"This is the first time we've done this type of fundraising. But the scale is so big we can't be provincial about it," he said.
The toll from the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster rose to almost 115,000 today as more dead were found in Indonesia's Aceh province. Governments and aid agencies have been attempting to provide supplies and shelter to more than five million people in one of the biggest humanitarian operations in history.
