The Garda Síochána may begin an investigation into leaks of confidential papers concerning Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's finances from the Mahon tribunal, following an official complaint, it has emerged.

Responding to media queries, the Garda Síochána said it could "confirm that we have had contact from a party to the Mahon tribunal.

"Information has been related to us regarding tribunal documentation. Gardaí are currently assessing this information and have sought further clarification from this party. At this juncture it is imprudent for An Garda Síochána to comment further in this matter."

In Blanchardstown in Dublin yesterday, Mr Ahern once again claimed that a conspiracy to hurt him politically had been discussed in a "west of Ireland hotel in August", although he did not give further details.

However, Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea (Limerick West) did go further, alleging that senior Fine Gael people had "encouraged the publication of material likely to be damaging to the Taoiseach".
