A file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions after a female garda was knocked to the ground and kicked a number of times during an altercation in a pub in east Cork.

The incident occurred after two gardaí entered a pub in Youghal on Saturday evening.

Gardaí had received a call to assist in getting a customer to leave the premises during the France v Ireland soccer match. However, the man refused to leave the pub when requested to do so and an altercation ensued between the customer, his companions and the gardaí.

The female garda was surrounded by a group of people and knocked to the ground, where she was kicked a number of times. Her partner also received a number of blows to his body.

A spokesman described the attack as particularly nasty, which left the two gardaí quite shaken.

One man in his early 20s was arrested and questioned and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

Gardaí yesterday appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the altercation to contact them.

Meanwhile, an investigation continues into an attack on two gardaí early on Sunday morning in west Cork. A man in his mid 20s stabbed one garda in the hand and broke the wrist of another garda, after he was stopped on suspicion of drink-driving.

The man and his female companion escaped on foot and both officers required hospital treatment.
